Commitment to be Creative Every Week

Hi Friends,

All of us have a lot of plates we are trying to juggle in the air! Responsibilities at home like housework which never feels done and upkeep of home and yard which seems like a cyclical thing that is never quite complete.  Family responsibilities such as care of young children and grandchildren, care of aging parents and keeping our spouse happy as well. Many of you work part time or full time and even bring work home with you!  Charity and Church responsibilities take time too. And then there is taking care to have a healthy diet and exercise regularly! Who has time to relax anymore! Who has time for creative pursuits? Well, we all need downtime but why should we make this a priority?

My thoughts about this could go on forever but the main thing I have learned is that I have to give myself permission to block off specific times through the week to do something creative. Since I am an Independent Stampin’ Up!® Demonstrator and make cards for my business SunnyLu Card Designs, you’d think this would not be a problem. But I struggle with this too! I have to schedule “free” time too.

I would love to tell you I have all the answers but I am still trying to figure this out too. One thing that is helping me is limiting my internet time. I find the Internet can be a huge time-suck! Don’t get me wrong. I think that Facebook, Instagram, Blogs, YouTube and Pinterest are all great! Although I find the new logarithms on Facebook a pain! But morning is my best time for creative pursuits and if I get sucked in first thing in the morning, I can waste so much time and not accomplish my goals for that day.

Another thing I find helps is something I learned from the Fly Lady, a cleaning guru that you should check out! She is very down-to-Earth and realistic. She recommends that you shower (if you do this in the morning), get dressed including shoes, put on make-up/do your hair and clean the bathroom before breakfast- let alone checking email or cruising the Internet! I get so much done when I follow her guidelines! She also encourages being organized at night including clean up your kitchen and set out your clothes before you go to bed and to go to bed at a decent hour!

I block off at least one hour of my morning in black and white in my calendar for doing something creative. A new watercolor technique, a new fun-fold, a new stamp set that I haven’t touched yet or one of my many other hobbies. I like to listen to music or an audiobook to occupy my left brain so my right brain has a chance to come out and play! The rest of the morning I get thinking tasks such as menu planning, blog writing, and book keeping done, since it is my more productive time. I try to make appointments in the afternoon for the doctor or dentist.

Well I hope my few suggestions help you find time to be creative!

Happy Stampin’

I am a retired RN. I am also an Independent Stampin' Up! Demonstrator and owner of SunnyLu Card Designs. I love paper-crafts and strive to share this love with others through both businesses. Working with other Stampers in my Stampin' Up business is such a fine thing! I love all my customers both those whom are brand new to stamping or have been stamping for 20+ years! As a result of stamping for a bit, I have a wealth of beautiful, handmade greeting cards and gift card holders for your enjoyment. My hope is that each of you will give the gift of a hand made snail mailed card to a family member, friend or just someone who needs a lift. What a joy to receive something other than bills and junk mail in your mailbox!
